Case Studies

The following are outline descriptions of projects we’ve undertaken across a wide range of industry sectors, some small, some very large. There are links to further pages containing photo sequences showing the variety of areas in which we’ve worked and how we ensure safety.

Former Bus Depot, Erdington, Birmingham

Firth Rixon – Sheffield

3-5 Thane Villas, Islington

Thane Villas is a street in Islington, London with many listed buildings. Rhodes Asbestos was engaged to remove asbestos pipe insulation prior to renovation of property no. 3-5. The work comprised careful removal of the pipes and thorough cleaning out of all traces of asbestos dust and fibres without damage to the fabric of the building (no damage to or removal of walls, bricks and tiles) and rendering it completely safe for renovation.

Site clearance for bridge building for Doncaster Council

This was a significantly large project to clear a patch of land in preparation for the building of a new bridge across the railway line. The land had been used for dumping of waste including asbestos fragments.

Summary of Works carried out

Before works could be started, the boiler room had to be cleared of contaminated water using a filtration system due to possibility of asbestos contamination to the water. Removal of asbestos insulation from clorifier tank in external tank room to former officers’ mess area. The asbestos was removed using low pressure injection to inject the tank with a wet strip surfactant using a pas 60 certified injection machine which ensures the asbestos stays wet during removal. Removal of asbestos insulation debris from loft space and removal of water tanks from loft area A full environmental clean was then carried out of the enclosure in the loft space.

“I found your men, especially the supervisors, to be very friendly and helpful. All paperwork was in place from day one and the job was completed to a good standard. I would have no hesitation in sending you future enquiries.” Regards Daniel Johnson health & safety officer Bloom Plant Ltd

Other Project Experience

Also, our directors do have a wealth of experience and we desribe below a few of the projects they have undertaken when working for a previous company – a then UK leader in asbestos removal.

Insulation board Case Study

Client: Major catering distribution organisation

Exposed damaged asbestos insulation board initially identified by the local Environmental Health Officer (EHO). The asbestos removal contractor was engaged by the client and conducted subsequent liaison with the EHO from gaining approval to proceed through to completion of the work.

Initial assessment:

Asbestos insulation board is in good condition and in general sealed. Above the cold store there is an area approximately half a square metre in size that is damaged and in need of removal and a further 5 locations where the boarding requires minor touch up. The remaining of the board requires labels to be applied only.

Estimated duration of work 1-2 hours

Scheduled time 1600 – 1800 Friday, after normal depot working hours to minimise disruption

Resources – 1 Supervisor, 2 Operatives and an Analyst

Description of Removal of Asbestos Insulation Board panelling

A containment enclosure was constructed on the roof of the Cold Store around the damaged boarding, a Type ‘H’ vac was used within the enclosure to enable the removal of the board by shadow vac technique. The boarding was treated with fibre suppressant applied by low pressure hand spray. The fixings to the board were clearly visible and were removed by hand screwdriver. The boarding was carefully lowered into a waste sack and immediately sealed with tape. The immediate area surrounding was environmentally cleaned and damaged areas to the adjacent board encapsulated. The area was offered to the analyst for inspection and air testing. Other areas above the cold room that had been identified as needing attention were pre cleaned with a Type ‘H’ vac and encapsulated and then labelled. The areas above the doors to the warehouse at high level were accessed by using a Personnel Lift with the operatives using access Harness Kits. The boarding in this location was labelled in three locations to provide warning. The lift was positioned to allow the operative to mount the cradle and be elevated to the position required to locate the label. The unit being used had the option for out reach but this was minimised by the initial positioning of the unit at floor level. All waste materials generated during this operation were treated as asbestos waste. On Completion the area was offered to the client’s representative for verification.

Materials were removed from site in a sealed vehicle and transferred to the asbestos removal contractor’s licensed transfer station – collected from the Goods Reception area.

The asbestos removal contractor was able to react quickly to the client’s needs, to liase on his behalf with the appropriate agencies (in particular, the local Environmental Health Officer), and to complete the task satisfactorily with minimum disruption.

High street store ceiling tiles summary

Many of the services in high street stores are suspended in the ceiling void. When such services need maintenance or enhancement, the ceiling tiles need to be moved. If such tiles contain one of the dangerous forms of asbestos, they need to be removed and replaced and all traces of asbestos dust removed. This is a job for The asbestos removal contractor’s teams.

Typically, for up to four tiles, this is a 3 person team, working overnight to ensure that the normal store operation is not compromised.

The asbestos removal contractor provides emergency call out to assist in situations where appropriate.

Emergency Waiver Operation Summary

There has been damage to asbestos containing materials which may pose an immediate hazard to employees or to the public.

The asbestos removal contractor is engaged to deal with the emergency and conducts all necessary liaison with Environmental Health and with the Health and Safety Executive to enable them to proceed with removing the hazard.

Typically, The asbestos removal contractor has a team on-site within 4 hours and addresses all necessary steps from air monitoring and sampling through to safe removal.

Whilst such jobs are normally short in duration, it’s possible that the initial investigations establish that the hazard is much more extensive than originally thought. The asbestos removal contractor will remain on-site until the necessary work is completed.
